We have provided over $425,000 in cash grants to more than 40 animal charities and spay/neuter programs! Your support really does make a difference.
Our 5,000+ square foot main store sells gently-used clothing, housewares, electronics, home décor, books, furniture and more! In turn, we support animal rescue charities and spay/neuter programs with much-needed cash grants. Our newest Furniture, Decor and More store opened in November 2013 and is located next door - and features our furniture, artwork, lamps, decor, vintage and collectibles. Park once and shop twice! Find a treat for yourself and give homeless pets a second chance at life!
Since opening in 2011, our goal has been to offer our customers a unique and fun thrift store shopping experience where every purchase benefits homeless dogs and cats. Our store is bright, organized and fun! All items are donated so every visit is a treasure hunt – you never know what kind of goodies you’ll find – and new items are added daily. At Second Life, you will find everything from antiques to vintage to brand new items. Get consignment store quality at thrift store prices
You’ll find our store is geared to the bargain shopper and animal lovers- with fun animal motifs painted on the back wall, rescue and shelter information posted throughout the store – and our Chief Smile Officer, Riley, roaming the store and looking for a good ear scratch. We host pet adoptions on a monthly basis so animal rescue groups can find homes for their adorable dogs and cats.
Donations of gently-used items are needed year-round and can be donated during open store hours. No appointment is necessary. We are a 501(c)(3) organization and donations are tax deductible.
Well behaved pets on a leash who are up-to-date on vaccinations and
are preferably, spayed or neutered, are welcome. Their humans must be on a leash.

Samy: This little 10-pound, 1 year old terrier mix boy is an absolute sweetheart! He gets along well with other dogs and he seems to love children. See him here.
Dorothy: Dorothy is a sweet, calm female pit bull who loves learning how to play with all of her canine foster siblings. Our best guess is that she is a year old. She has a very gentle temperament and is already learning to chew her new toys and not other things! Learn more here.
Clyde: ADOPTED! This handsome German Shepherd mix boy is about 7 years old and is looking for his forever home. He has been around some other dogs, cats and kids, and does well in most situations. He even does well at doggy day care. Meet him here.
Potter: He is a young Staffordshire mix - about 40 lbs, a short and stocky guy. He loves meeting new people, and will make big puppy dog eyes at you in order to cuddle and get petted. He is house-trained, and good in his crate when his foster parents are at work. Potter will be a great dog for anyone looking for a goofy, affectionate companion! Meet him here.
Together, we are creating a world where every pet matters. The mission of Atlanta Animal Rescue Friends, Inc. is to end pet overpopulation. We strive to accomplish our mission through three main objectives:
1. Promote informed, responsible, and humane companion animal ownership;
2. Eliminate euthanasia of healthy adoptable animals;
3. Achieve total sterilization of all companion pets
AARF was founded in 2002 and is a 501(c)(3) non-profit animal rescue organization licensed by the state of Georgia that works to assist abandoned, abused and stray animals in finding new, loving homes. Read more about this wonderful group on their website or Facebook page.

Greyhound Meet and Greet
Saturday, May 30
While the actual greyhounds available for adoption won't be joining the adoption event, as the activity is stressful for the dogs who aren't used to such commotion, there will be pets of current greyhound parents on-site who can answer questions.
You can learn more about this wonderful breed and the types of homes needed for these retired racing greyhounds.
Please come out and support their rescue efforts even if you're not looking to adopt. Smiles are guaranteed.

From their website:
The mission of Southeastern Greyhound Adoption/Greyhound Pets of America-Atlanta (SEGA) is to find good permanent homes for former racing Greyhounds. In furtherance of this mission, SEGA seeks to educate the public about why Greyhounds make good pets.
SEGA currently houses its Greyhounds in an adoption kennel or in foster homes of experienced Greyhound owners to ease the transition from track life to pet home life. Before any hounds are released for adoption through SEGA, they are thoroughly examined by a veterinarian. The dogs are spayed or neutered, brought current on shots, given a heartworm test and preventative, and teeth are cleaned as needed.
Thanks To You...Over $425,000 in Grants to Animal Rescue Charities!
To date, we have provided more than $125,000 to organizations specifically for spay/neuter grants. At an average of $75-90 per procedure, this means you have helped around 1,500 family-owned dogs and cats take the "no mommy" and "no daddy" pledge.
Considering how easy it is for dogs and cats to reproduce, you can see what a difference you are making in keeping unwanted pets from being born:
When you shop at our store, not only do you find unique bargains, but you are giving homeless pets a chance to find love.
Your purchases have helped with:
- Spaying & Neutering of animals before they are adopted - to stop the cycle!
- Offering low cost spaying & neutering to family pets
- Vetting costs of animals brought into rescue
- Boarding of beloved pets who are affected by domestic abuse in the home
- Education promoting the human-animal bond
- Promoting pit bull awareness and education
- Rescuing animals from high-kill shelters
- And more!
Thank You For Your Pet Food Donations!
Thank you to everyone who has donated pet food and supplies this year to help struggling families feed and care for their beloved pets.
We accept donations year-round in our Main Store. These items are picked up Pet Buddies Food Pantry and distributed to families who need a little extra help to care for their pets.
Donations of pet food, kitty litter, flea/tick medications, collars and leashes are accepted any day we are open.
It's a simple solution to keep loved family pets out of shelters.

Our Egyptian foster, Gordy, is back with us after being in his "forever" home for 9 months. His mom has decided she can no longer give him the attention he needs as she figures out changes in her life. We feel so sad for him as he has already had so much abandonment in his life.
He is up for adoption and looking for a home where someone is home a lot and can be patient with him as he adjusts to a new environment. He is such a big teddy bear with a lot of character. Look at his smile!
He's about 7-9 years old and is not a high-energy dog, so he'd be great with a family that just wants a big dog to love.
We brought Gordy back from the ESMA shelter in Cairo, Egypt, where a large mixed-breed dog with a deformed paw had little chance of being adopted in his home country.
We believe his forever home really is out there somewhere.
Fostering Saves Lives!
Both of our Chief Smile Officers, Riley and Lucky, were our foster dogs. We had no intention of keeping either dog, but once they found their way into our hearts, we knew they were home.
This is usually the first thing I hear from people when I talk to them about foster. "I could never give them up" or "I would keep every one." My answer is always along the lines of "I would rather cry tears of joy knowing they have a forever home than tears of sorrow knowing they never had a chance to get out of the shelter." It's the absolute truth.
We understand...it's hard not to fall in love with an animal quickly as they are so loving. Although we kept Riley and Lucky, there have been many more foster dogs that have left our homes and gone on to their forever families. Sure...it hurts a bit when they go their new homes...and we certainly miss them.
But you know what keeps us going...getting updates and stories about how happy they are in their new homes.
Fostering is one of the most rewarding things we have ever done and will ever do. There is nothing like seeing a shy, scared dog come out of her shell and learn to trust for the first time. Watching them gain confidence and skills to be happier family pets. We love getting to meet and love on more dogs than we could ever share our home within our lifetime.
We post information about fostering often because we are such strong believers in its power to save lives. I learned recently that two people - one of our Second Life customers and a friend of Toby's (one of our co-founders) - decided to take the plunge and foster for the first time because of our repeated posts.
I am happy to say that thanks to our messages, the 11 dogs in this picture were given a second chance at life. Without their fosters, they may not be here today.
Most rescue groups do not have shelters, so they rely on foster homes. Once these homes are full, they cannot save additional homes until their rescues get adopted or more people sign up to be foster homes.
What does it mean to foster?
You provide love and shelter and take care of the dog or cat (or bunny or bird or guinea pig, etc. ) until their forever home is found. The guidelines vary between groups, but generally, the rescues take care of the costs for vetting, spaying/neutering and often the food too. You just provide the love, shelter and perhaps some training. Oh...and lots and lots of TLC....this is required for fostering!
When you agree to foster, you save another 2 lives - the one you are fostering and the room you open up in the shelter for another dog or cat.
Types of fosters needed include:
- Long-term - cruelty cases, military deployment, harder to place pets (special needs, shy, seniors, etc)
- Short-term - 2-3 weeks until the animal transported to rescues in the Northeast US
- Medical Care - pets recovering from heartworm treatment, medical procedures, mange...any medical needs.
- Mama's and babies - moms and their puppies or kittens who are too young to be adopted
- Happy, healthy dogs and cats - adorable, healthy dogs and cats (and other types of animals) who need a place to crash until their forever families find them
Stay tuned to our email next week to learn more about the dogs in this photo and how they got a second chance at life from their fosters.
