Join our board to make a difference and help Second Life shape a stronger future for our organization and Georgia’s pets.

We are still growing our board structure, too.

We’re looking for people who are comfortable joining a working board, helping develop new processes and balancing good governance with the practical realities of running a busy nonprofit thrift store.

This isn’t a board where members simply attend meetings and sit on the sidelines. We want people who will ask questions, share ideas, participate in projects and help strengthen Second Life for the future.

This is an evolving board without a formal structure. Let’s just say we aren’t the formal, corporate-style boards that are common in larger corporations. You should be flexible, willing to put in the time required and believe in teamwork, kindness, inclusion and second chances.

Organization: Second Life Thrift Store (Avondale Estates, GA)
Reports To: Board of Directors
Term: Three-year term, eligible for re-appointment for one additional term
Position: Volunteer
Time Commitment: Average 4–8 hours per month

About Second Life

Second Life was created to make a difference for animals. We operate an upscale thrift store, selling donated items with the mission to provide financial grants to animal rescues, spay/neuter efforts, outreach programs and other animal welfare efforts in Georgia.

Position Summary

Second Life is looking for passionate, committed people who want to use their experience and skills to make a difference for animals throughout Georgia.

This is the first significant expansion of our Board of Directors, and we’re looking for people who want to be part of this next chapter with us. We’re a small nonprofit, and our Board structure and processes are still evolving. We don’t have everything figured out, and we don’t expect new Board members to either. We’ll learn, evolve, and build stronger Board practices together.

The Board’s role is governance, not the day-to-day management of our stores. Board members help guide Second Life’s long-term direction, provide financial and strategic oversight, participate in committees and projects, and bring their individual knowledge and experience to the organization.

We’re especially interested in people with experience in finance, human resources, real estate, business management, legal, marketing and communications, nonprofit governance, fundraising, and other areas that can help Second Life grow and thrive.

Board Commitment

• Attend regular Board meetings, generally four per year
• Participate in at least one committee, task force, or special project
• Review materials before meetings and actively participate in Board discussions and decisions
• Plan to commit approximately 4–8 hours per month, although some months may require more time

• A collaborative approach and willingness to ask questions, share ideas, and learn
• Comfort working with a small nonprofit where our Board structure and processes are still evolving
• Willingness to actively contribute your time, skills, and experience
• Welcoming and respectful of diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
• A genuine commitment to Second Life’s mission and animal welfare

Other Requirements

• Board members must be aligned with Second Life’s mission, values, and commitment to animal welfare and reducing pet overpopulation. This includes our support of spay/neuter, rescue, and adoption and our position against the breeding and sale of companion animals.
• Make an annual personal contribution to Second Life at a level that is meaningful to you
• Prior Board experience is helpful, but it isn’t required. We’re most interested in finding people who believe in what we do and are ready to be active, engaged members of the Board.
• Positions will be filled on a rolling basis as we build our expanded Board, with new terms expected to begin in early 2027.

Position Summary

Second Life is looking for a detail-oriented, organized person to serve as Secretary of our Board of Directors and use their skills to make a difference for animals in Georgia.

The Secretary is a voting member and officer of the Board who plays an important role in keeping the Board organized and its governance work on track. The Secretary coordinates meeting minutes and Board materials, maintains important Board records, tracks Board terms and elections, and helps ensure required notices and documentation are completed in accordance with Second Life’s Bylaws and policies.

Accurate and consistent recordkeeping helps protect Second Life, strengthens accountability, and supports effective Board governance. We’re looking for someone who can capture important information clearly and concisely, stay on top of details and deadlines, and help us build strong Board practices as we grow.

Like all Board members, the Secretary participates in Board discussions and decisions and contributes their individual knowledge and experience to the organization.

Board Commitment

• Attend regular Board meetings, generally four per year
• Coordinate meeting minutes, Board materials, and important Board records
• Keep track of Board terms, elections, and other governance-related dates and requirements
• Participate actively in Board discussions and decisions
• Plan to commit approximately 6–10 hours per month, although some months may require more time

What We’re Looking For

• Strong attention to detail, organization, and follow-through
• Ability to listen to discussions and accurately capture key decisions and information without creating transcript-style minutes
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Comfort with shared digital files and basic technology used for Board communications and recordkeeping
• Ability to meet deadlines and keep important information organized
• A collaborative approach and willingness to ask questions, share ideas, and learn
• Comfort working with a small nonprofit where our Board structure and processes are still evolving
• Welcoming and respectful of diverse backgrounds and perspectives
• A genuine commitment to Second Life’s mission and animal welfare

Performance Expectations

• Ensure the Board receives timely and accurate meeting minutes
• Help maintain the organization’s compliance with by-laws
• Promote transparency and responsible record keeping with a board book
• Support the Board in making informed decisions that advance the nonprofit’s mission
